Overview

International Business Machines Corporation, commonly known as IBM or "Big Blue," is one of the world's oldest and most storied technology companies, headquartered in Armonk, New York, and operating in more than 175 countries. IBM is a component of both the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Originally founded in 1911 as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company and renamed IBM in 1924, the company has reinvented itself repeatedly — from punch-card tabulating machines to mainframes, personal computers, and, over the last decade, a deliberate refocusing on hybrid cloud, enterprise software, consulting, and artificial intelligence. The Red Hat acquisition gave IBM a genuinely leading position in enterprise Linux and hybrid-cloud/container orchestration (OpenShift), which has become one of IBM's fastest-growing and most strategically important businesses, and which meaningfully improved IBM's overall growth and margin profile after a decade of revenue decline through the 2010s.
