Valero Energy Corporation is the largest independent petroleum refiner and marketer in the United States, and one of the largest globally. Headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, and incorporated in Delaware, Valero is a member of the S&P 500 and Fortune 500, operating in the Energy sector under the Oil & Gas Refining & Marketing industry. The company generates roughly $130-145 billion in annual revenue and employs approximately 9,800 people worldwide. Valero's scale comes not from owning oil wells but from converting crude oil and other feedstocks into transportation fuels and petrochemical products at a network of large, complex refineries spread across the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and, through joint ventures, other regions.

What They Do & How They Make Money

Valero's core business is buying crude oil and other feedstocks on the open market, running them through its refineries to produce gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, asphalt, petrochemicals, and other products, and then selling those refined products wholesale and in bulk to distributors, retailers, other refiners/marketers, railroads, airlines, and end users. Profitability depends heavily on the "crack spread" — the difference between the price of crude oil (input) and the price of refined products (output) — rather than the absolute price of oil itself, which makes Valero's earnings cyclical and sensitive to refining margins, seasonal demand, and global product supply. Valero also owns extensive logistics assets (pipelines, terminals, and storage) that help move crude in and finished product out efficiently, and it has built a growing low-carbon fuels business, investing roughly $6 billion to date in renewable diesel, sustainable aviation fuel, and ethanol production, which diversify revenue beyond traditional petroleum refining and benefit from renewable fuel credit programs (like RINs and LCFS credits) in addition to product sales.

Business Segments

Valero reports three segments:

  • Refining — By far the largest segment, this includes 15 petroleum refineries across the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. with combined throughput capacity of about 3.2 million barrels per day, producing conventional gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, asphalt, and petrochemical feedstocks. This segment generates the substantial majority of Valero's revenue and operating income, and its results swing with refining crack spreads.
  • Renewable Diesel — Operated primarily through Diamond Green Diesel (DGD), a consolidated joint venture with Darling Ingredients. DGD runs Gulf Coast plants with roughly 1.2 billion gallons per year of renewable diesel, renewable naphtha, and sustainable aviation fuel capacity, converting fats, oils, and greases into low-carbon fuel. This segment has become a meaningful profit contributor, benefiting from federal and state clean-fuel incentive programs.
  • Ethanol — Twelve ethanol plants in the U.S. Midwest with roughly 1.7 billion gallons per year of production capacity, converting corn into ethanol and co-products (distillers grains, corn oil) sold into the fuel-blending and animal feed markets.

Exact segment revenue/operating income splits vary by year and are disclosed in Valero's 10-K (Note on Segment Information), but Refining consistently accounts for the large majority of both revenue and operating income, with Renewable Diesel providing an outsized profit contribution relative to its revenue share in years when clean-fuel credit values are strong, and Ethanol being the smallest of the three.

Valero competes primarily with other large independent and integrated refiners:

  • Marathon Petroleum (MPC) — Valero's closest peer in scale, with one of the largest U.S. refining systems plus an integrated midstream and branded retail network that gives it some scale advantages Valero lacks.
  • Phillips 66 (PSX) — A more diversified downstream player with midstream, chemicals, and renewable fuels operations alongside refining, giving it multiple revenue streams beyond pure refining.
  • PBF Energy (PBF) and CVR Energy (CVI) — Smaller, regionally focused independent refiners that compete directly in specific markets (e.g., CVR's operations near Valero's Ardmore refinery) but lack Valero's scale and retail integration.
  • Delek US Holdings (DK) — A smaller regional refiner with Permian Basin crude-sourcing advantages.

Valero's principal competitive advantage is sheer scale and refining complexity: its large, geographically diverse, high-complexity refinery network allows it to process a wide range of crude grades (including cheaper, heavier, and sour crudes) and shift production toward the most profitable products, which supports higher margins than smaller or less complex competitors can achieve. Its logistics network of pipelines and terminals reduces transportation costs and improves feedstock flexibility. Valero has also been an early and aggressive mover into renewable diesel through the Diamond Green Diesel joint venture, giving it a leading position in low-carbon liquid fuels that provides some diversification away from traditional refining cyclicality.

Key risks include the inherently cyclical and volatile nature of refining margins, which are driven by global crude supply, product demand, and refining capacity additions/closures worldwide; regulatory and environmental risk, including compliance costs and potential changes to renewable fuel standards, carbon regulations, or emissions rules that could raise costs or alter the economics of its low-carbon investments; exposure to volatile commodity input costs; and the longer-term secular risk of slowing gasoline demand growth as vehicle electrification expands, which could pressure refining volumes over time even as jet fuel and petrochemical demand remain more resilient.
