Overview

Eversource Energy is a New England-focused, fully regulated electric, natural gas, and water utility holding company headquartered in Springfield, Massachusetts (with major offices in Hartford, Connecticut and Boston, Massachusetts). It is a Fortune 500 company and one of the largest regulated utility groups in the northeastern United States, serving roughly 4 million electric, gas, and water customers across Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. For fiscal year 2025 the company reported revenue of approximately $13.5–14.0 billion and net income of roughly $1.5–1.7 billion, with about 10,700 employees. Eversource traces its roots to 1966's Northeast Utilities (a merger of Connecticut Light & Power, Western Massachusetts Electric, and Hartford Electric Light), rebranded to Eversource Energy in 2015 following a major 2012 combination with Boston's NSTAR.

What They Do & How They Make Money

Eversource is a "wires and pipes" business: it does not primarily generate electricity for profit but instead owns and operates the regulated infrastructure — transmission lines, distribution wires, natural gas pipelines, and water mains — that delivers energy and water to homes and businesses. Its revenue comes from state-regulated rates that customers pay for delivery service, which are set through rate cases with utility commissions in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. Because these are cost-of-service regulated monopolies, Eversource earns a return on the capital it invests in grid infrastructure (an "allowed rate of return" set by regulators, generally in the 9–10% range on equity), meaning its profitability is driven less by sales volume and more by how much capital it deploys into approved infrastructure upgrades — grid modernization, reliability improvements, electrification-readiness, and storm hardening. It also earns transmission revenue through FERC-regulated formula rates, which tend to be more predictable and constructive than state distribution rates. Eversource previously held equity stakes in several Northeast offshore wind projects (South Fork Wind, Revolution Wind, Sunrise Wind) developed with Ørsted, but announced in 2023 a strategic exit from offshore wind generation development, selling down its stakes at a loss to refocus capital on its core regulated transmission, distribution, and water businesses.

Its transmission business in particular is viewed favorably by investors because FERC formula rates provide more certainty and faster cost recovery than state-level distribution rate cases, which can be contentious and slow. Eversource is also positioned to benefit from grid electrification trends — EV adoption, heat pump conversions, and renewable interconnection — all of which require sustained transmission and distribution capital investment, a tailwind for a company that earns on its capital base.

The company's key risks are largely regulatory and political. New England regulators, especially in Massachusetts and Connecticut, have grown more aggressive on rate case outcomes and reliability performance standards, and Eversource has faced criticism over storm response, billing practices, and its historical opposition to distributed solar/net metering. Its 2023 exit from offshore wind, taken at a loss, reflected the execution risk and capital intensity of large infrequently-permitted energy projects, and underscored a strategic pivot back toward "lower-risk" regulated wires-and-pipes investment. Rising interest rates increase the cost of the debt-heavy capital structure typical of utilities, pressuring margins and dividend growth if allowed returns don't keep pace.
